We booked an excursion to Hakone on a whim and I'm so glad we did! The Perect Day in Hakone- History, Hidden Gems and Private Onsen Experience

Our day trip to Hakone with JP was one of the highlights of our time in Japan. JP picked us up right at our hotel in an amazing van with adjustable reclining seat such a great way to spend a full day exploring outside Tokyo. He took us along the scenic ocean route to Hakone, and the drive itself became part of the experience. JP is incredibly knowledgeable, and we learned so much about Japanese history along the way. We asked him question after question about everything from Japan’s past to Current Events, and he was always thoughtful, informative and engaging. Throughout the day, JP stopped at beautiful scenic spots where we could enjoy the views and take some great photos. One of the absolute highlights was visiting a local woodworking artisan who makes traditional Japanese puzzle boxes. Not only were the boxes beautiful works of art, but learning the story behind them was fascinating – the idea was to create a box that couldn’t simply be opened or broken into unless you knew the secret sequence to solve the puzzle. It was exactly the kind of unique cultural experience we never would have found on our own. We also enjoyed a lovely walk near Hakone shrine before ending the day in the best possible way. JP took us to a private onsen where we had our own room for several hours to completely relax and enjoy the experience in privacy. Afterward, we had a wonderful traditional Japanese lunch that felt truly authentic and was something we never would have experienced in Tokyo. The entire day felt thoughtful, personal and completely different from a standard sightseeing tour. JP gave us a wonderful combination of scenery, history, culture, food and relaxation. We cannot recommend this tour highly enough if you are looking for a special day trip from Tokyo that takes you beyond the usual tourist experience. Book with JP. JP was simply the best!!!

Mt Fuji markets, temples and more

We had a private Mt. Fuji area tour in July 2026. Despite the rain and no views of Mt Fuji we still had a great time. We stopped at an area with a few hot springs and vendors selling food and giant peaches. Other fun stops included ice caves, a music box museum on a beautiful lake, and a temple in a forest with ancient trees. Lunch was an amazing Japanese curry at an upscale, chic hostel! And we topped it off with a visit to an authentic osen. Our driver was a Canadian who has been living in Tokyo for 8 years so there were no language issues. He was very friendly and open to adjusting our schedule based on the weather. Overall, it was a great day!

In addition to giving us information about all the points of interest along the way he told us about the history of Japan which we all found extremely interesting. Exceptional Tour with an Outstanding and Thoughtful Guide

Our guide Evan was truly excellent. As a native English speaker, he spoke very clearly and understandably, and provided us with many fascinating historical and social insights about Japan, both during the journey and at the individual sights. It was especially positive that he always made sure to involve the entire group. Due to logistical issues, he arrived about 20 minutes late, but more than made up for it: as an apology, he treated the whole group to coffee and fully made up for the lost time at the end of the tour, even adding a bit of extra time. His flexibility and helpfulness also deserve special mention: since we had a vegan in our group, he immediately arranged a suitable restaurant for us without hesitation. He even went the extra mile by calling ahead to check whether they accepted card payments or only cash — a truly very thoughtful service. The tour to Nikko itself is truly impressive. Anyone looking for a mix of nature, history, and a special, almost idyllic atmosphere in Japan should definitely book this excursion.

Wonderful Fuji and Hakone tour with Evan!

I took my four young daughters on a wonderful tour with Evan Stutt. Who is an extremely nice Canadian man that has lived here in Japan for about 10 years. First off, the pick up (and eventual drop off) process was incredibly easy. We communicated through text messaging initially and it went very well throughout the day. We set off to see Mt. Fuji and the mountain town of Hakone in the morning. After the drive up the mountain we stopped by the Mt. Fuji viewing area. Unfortunately we experienced some heavy rain during this portion of the trip so our Fuji views were minimal. However, the reality of viewing Mt. Fuji is a bit of a coin flip anyway. We then visited multiple shrines around Hakone and Evan provided insight to everything we saw. He took us to a 400 year old tea house/rest stop that travelers would visit when they traversed from Kyoto to Edo (now Tokyo). We drank a semi sweet drink called Amazake that warmed us up and gave us a boost of energy for the rest of the day. Much like the travelers would experience on the Old Tokaido Highway. Which was the dirt road that connected Kyoto and Edo. That immersive experience was very special. Our favorite part of the day though was the Onsen in Hakone. The rainy day made in difficult to see Fuji but the feeling of being in an authentic Hakone Onsen with rain falling on your head is otherworldly! It cannot be fully described. Only felt…. In general, I cannot recommend this entire experience enough! Enjoy every second of it. Thanks again Evan!!

The best way to visit Hakone

Hakone Day Trip

What a fantastic day with Darell on our Hakone trip. We had a wonderful time seeing Mt. Fuji, Hakone Shrine, a traditional tea house that has been run by the same family for over 400 years as well as a visit to an Onsen. Very well put together private tour. They stop at numerous breathtaking locations, including a lookout point and multiple stops in Hakone including an incredible shrine. We speak English and were very happy with Evan who was extremely knowledgeable articulating the history of the locations. If this is a trip you are planning I would recommend paying the extra for a private room otherwise men and women are separated and bathing suits are not permitted. Elie was very accommodating when I contacted him with concern about the weather. He allowed us to change our booking to a day when the weather was predicted to be better. Our guide, Lenny was the perfect one for us. He had a lot in common with members of our group and the conversation during the drive to Hakone was great! He was also a safe driver, smoothly navigating the tight, winding roads. He gave us restaurant and shopping suggestions from a local’s perspective. He gave us flexibility to choose what we wanted to do. We started the day by getting a cloudy view of Mount Fuiji. Since it was a cloudy, rainy day, we didn’t bother trying to go get a closer view: visiting a beautiful shrine/temple Lenny also took us to a traditional tea house where we tried mochi snacks and different beverages. For the final stop, we were all a bit apprehensive about going to an onsen for the first time, so he gave us an alternative. However he said that no one had ever said they regretted experiencing the onsen. We ultimately decided to try it and he was right! We didn’t regret going. The food that we ate there was delicious too, one of our daughter’s favorite meals in Japan. We were able to get some relaxation and rejuvenation after a long HOT day at Tokyo Disney Sea the day before. Our skin also felt great from the natural mineral water. Wow! Amazing Family Tour.

Wow! We are a family of 5, traveling from the USA. The ages of our kids, 10,13,15 make it difficult sometimes to serve our big party. Views of Mt Fuji without the crowds

I went on this trip as an American tourist with a couple friends. Lenny was a perfect tour guide because he was knowledgeable and we were able to speak with him easily in English about everything in Japan. He took us to a great overlook of Mt Fuji that was on the other side of the mountain away from the touristy part where there were no crowds. We also viewed a temple where he explained the Japanese rituals. We also chose to do the onsen experience, which wad great. Just a couple things to note is that if you are American, the onsen may be uncomfortable because you are walking around (separated by gender) completely naked, so it may be jarring for those who are self-conscious for American children of certain ages. Also, if you choose to do the onsen you may not have time for other experiences, such as museums. But we are very glad to have had an authentic Japanese experience!

Wet and cold day in Hakone

Dominik was our guide on a wet, cold day to Hakone. He picked us up on time at our hotel in Tokyo in a very nice comfortable van. We knew we had no hope of seeing Fuji that day but settled back for an enjoyable day out of town. Traffic going outbound was thick but Dominik was very safe. We stopped along the way for snacks and also to get stamps. We took the back roads in Hakone-the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. We stopped at the shrine in Hakone and then to the onsen. Hot springs and a cool rain made an enjoyable time there. Back to Tokyo in the afternoon. I recommend this service and hope your weather is nice too.

Spectacular excursion with Eli

We had a spectacular excursion with Eli on our recent stopover in Tokyo. We had a 3 day stop in Tokyo on our cruise and friends were joining us, embarking in Tokyo. Eli seamlessly picked them up at there hotel and then met us at our ship. The vehicle was modern clean and very comfortable and could’ve have held at least 6 passengers. We headed out for our 10 hour tour to Hakone and about 90 minutes into it started seeing spectacular views of Mt. Fuji. We went to a few viewing spots before arriving at an ancient temple where we spent some time learning about the history. (More views of Fuji) We then went for a local lunch before heading to the highlight for us, The Hakone Open Air Museum with major pieces from Henry Moore, Miro, Chadwick, Rodin etc. all in a magnificent open air setting. We concluded our tour at a wonderful onsen before returning to Tokyo. Eli was a fabulous guide; personable, caring and never rushing us. He is French but has lived in Japan for many years and his English is impeccable. Hi highly recommended this tour and suggest enlisting Eli for any tours for which you can reserve him, around the Tokyo area.

Great Excursion

We were a little disappointed that Mount Fuji was covered by the clouds by the time we went up to the viewing site, but we still had a great time. Elie was wonderful, he even provided a list of good restaurants for us to try while we were in Tokyo.

The whole tour would be based on your needs what you wanted to do. You can switch activities around if you wanted to. For my tour it was raining in the afternoon. My tour guide Elis messaged me beforehand to ask to switch if needed and on the day he went very slow and very safe. It was a wonderful experience. The scenery was amazing but just it was raining. The tour guide was very helpful and explained very well. The day was very fun for me overall. It’s a new and different experience indeed recommend!
