Uji is the home of matcha in Kyoto. In a tea room that is rarely open to the public, set in the courtyard of a tea merchant more than 160 years old, you grind tencha leaves on a millstone and taste usucha, thin tea, made with your own matcha.

A short introduction to the tea room, the merchant's history and the thinking behind the tea ceremony makes it easy for first-timers, and the tea room looks out over a garden designated a scenic spot by Kyoto Prefecture.
