Toji Temple has more than 1,200 years of history. A monk guides you around it and a subtemple, speaking about Kobo Daishi Kukai and Shingon Buddhism, with access to areas usually closed to the public such as the ground floor of the five-story pagoda.
At the subtemple you learn incense etiquette, copy sutras with a monk and receive a limited goshuin stamp. Some areas are open to the general public from 31 October to 13 December.
