Mount Mitake rises 929 metres in western Tokyo. With a local guide you hike to Musashi Mitake Shrine at the summit, known as the 'Shrine in the Sky', and hear from an oshi, a traditional shrine guide, about the mountain's history and beliefs.
Lunch made from local ingredients is served at the shrine's shukubo, a temple lodging, where you talk with a priest whose family has cared for the place for generations. In the afternoon you walk through a rock garden that changes with the seasons. Routes vary with the course you choose.
