Kana characters are unique to Japan and were refined as an art form in Kyoto. At a family's gallery, home to four generations of master calligraphers, you learn the history and the basics of the style.
You then write words of your choice, picked from a list that includes themes of Kyoto and its seasons, on a traditional fan with a calligraphy brush. You take your work home, along with a sample your instructor writes for you.
