Tokyo: UNESCO Heritage Shrines and Nature Day Trip to Nikko

1 Day

Overview

Embark on a journey to the historic city of Nikko, where ancient traditions meet stunning natural wonders. Your day begins with a private pickup from your Tokyo hotel in a luxury, air-conditioned van, ensuring a comfortable and seamless experience. As we travel northward, you’ll witness the gradual transition from urban landscapes to the serene countryside.

Our first destination is the magnificent Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the lavishly decorated mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Here, intricate carvings and vibrant colors showcase the pinnacle of Japanese craftsmanship. Next, we’ll visit the iconic Shinkyo Bridge, a sacred vermilion bridge gracefully arching over the Daiya River, offering a perfect photo opportunity and a glimpse into Nikko’s spiritual heritage.

We then ascend the legendary Iroha Slope, a winding mountain road famous for its 48 hairpin turns, each named after a character of the ancient Japanese alphabet. This thrilling drive will lead us to our lunch, where we’ll dine at a charming local restaurant known for its authentic cuisine and warm hospitality, offering a true taste of Nikko’ culinary delights. We will then continue our day towards the breathtaking Kegon Falls, one of Japan’s three most beautiful waterfalls, where you can feel the mist and hear the roar of cascading water. A short ride on the Akechidaira Ropeway takes us to an observation deck offering panoramic views of Lake Chuzenji, Mount Nantai, and the surrounding mountains—a perfect spot to appreciate the natural splendor of Nikko.

To end the day, and if time allows, you have the option to unwind at Lake Chuzenji, enjoying its tranquil waters and scenic beauty, or immerse yourself in a traditional onsen (hot spring) experience, rejuvenating body and mind.
